Sallie Parker - Public Comment - Re: Comprehensive Plan - Planning Board Meeting 5/28/2024

When the present City Council of Georgetown voted in favor of eight-story buildings at certain points on the perimeter of Historic Georgetown, I saw the beginning of the end of this wonderfully slow southern town with its old world charm that cannot be found anywhere else anymore.

Soon after that, we began to see growth - lots of it: filling stations, car washes, a hotel and the possibility of another one. More traffic, unfamiliar faces, fewer parking spaces, fewer beautiful views.

Some of this is good and necessary, we understand that. Financial health is fundamental.

There is a fine line between financial health and greed. Please don’t turn Georgetown into another Charleston, which was like a naturally beautiful woman turned harlot (as I well know because I grew up there in the 50s and 60s).
Or Asheville, where I moved later, which was ruined within four months of a ”comprehensive plan” to get people to move there. Traffic became so bad in Asheville, it had to build overpasses like in Charlotte.

Is that what we want in this little city? People said it would never happen in Asheville. And they say it will never happen in Georgetown.

It will.

Please Stop. Before it’s too late.

Thank you, and blessings,
Sallie Parker
